How the cupcake price is calculated

Cost per cupcake = (batter + frosting + hours × wage + overhead) ÷ cupcakes per batch + decorations/liner + box ÷ 12.
Price per dozen = cost per cupcake × 12 ÷ (1 − fee % − margin %), rounded up to a whole dollar. Half dozen = (6 cupcakes + one full box) ÷ (1 − fee % − margin %), rounded up.

Default example: ($6 + $6 + 2 h × $18 + $1.50) ÷ 24 = $2.0625, plus $0.15 decorations and $0.2083 of the box = $2.42 a cupcake, or $29.05 a dozen. At 30% margin and 3% fees: $29.05 ÷ 0.67 = $43.36, so $44 a dozen ($3.67 each).

Questions

How much should I charge for a dozen cupcakes?

Add up one batch: batter, frosting, decorations, liners, your hours times your wage, and overhead. Divide by the cupcakes it makes, add the box cost per cupcake, multiply by 12, then divide by (1 minus fees minus margin). Many home bakers in the US land somewhere around $24 to $42 a dozen for simple cupcakes and more for custom decorating, but your own cost is the floor.

How do I price mini cupcakes?

Treat them as their own product. A standard recipe makes roughly two to three times as many minis, so enter the mini yield as the batch size and your real decorating time. Minis often take nearly as long to frost per piece, so per-piece labor stays high and minis rarely cost half of a standard cupcake.

Should I charge for a half dozen?

Yes, but not exactly half. A half-dozen box costs nearly as much as a dozen box and takes the same order handling. This calculator prices the half dozen from 6 cupcakes plus a full box cost.

What margin should I use for cupcakes?

Because this calculator already pays your wage, the margin is extra business profit for things like equipment, slow weeks and growth. 25% to 40% is a common planning range. If the price feels too high, look at labor time and batch size first.
