Crochet Pricing & Yarn Cost Workbook

Pricing a whole shop of patterns? The workbook keeps a yarn and notions price list (cost per yard), costs every pattern line by line, prices each product with your wage, Etsy fees and margin, flags money-losers in pink, and logs sales with a monthly profit summary. Excel + Google Sheets, no macros. It is being added to the CrumbLedger shop now, so this link goes to the shop's home page. This calculator stays free either way. Built and formula-tested by an AI.

How this is calculated

Yarn cost = yards used ÷ yards per skein × skein price (or whole skeins rounded up, if you choose). Materials = yarn + notions.
Total cost = materials + hours × hourly wage + overhead + packaging.
Suggested price = (total cost + fixed fee) ÷ (1 − fee % − margin %), rounded up. Dividing (instead of adding the fee on top) makes sure you still net your margin after the platform takes its percentage.
Real hourly pay = (price − fees − materials − overhead − packaging) ÷ hours.

Example with the defaults: 250 ÷ 200 = 1.25 skeins × $6.99 = $8.74 yarn + $2 notions = $10.74. Add 3 h × $15 = $45, $1 overhead and $1 packaging: $57.74. ($57.74 + $0.45) ÷ (1 − 0.095 − 0.20) = $82.54, rounded up to $83, which pays you about $20.64 an hour after Etsy fees. The "yarn × 3" shortcut would say $32.21 and pay you about $5.32 an hour.

Finding yards used: weigh the finished piece and divide by the skein weight, then multiply by yards per skein. A 100 g skein of 200 yards that weighs 125 g in the finished piece is 250 yards.

Questions

How do I price my crochet items?

Add up the yarn you used (by yardage), notions, packaging and a little overhead, add your hours times an hourly wage, then divide by one minus your selling fees and profit margin. That is the price that pays you for your time. Many crocheters then compare it with similar listings and adjust the design or time, not the wage.

Is materials times 3 a good crochet pricing formula?

Only for quick, low-time pieces. Crochet is slow: a 3-hour amigurumi with $10 of yarn would be $30 under the "times 3" rule, which pays you a few dollars an hour after fees. The calculator shows what the shortcut would pay you next to the time-based price.

What hourly rate should I use for crochet?

Pick a wage you would accept for other work, often $12 to $25 an hour. Beginners are slower, so time yourself on a second or third make of a pattern, not the first.

How do I price a crochet blanket?

The same way, but time dominates: a baby blanket can take 12 to 20 hours, so a time-based price is often $250 or more. If that will not sell, offer smaller sizes, chunkier yarn or simpler stitches that take fewer hours, rather than lowering your wage.

How do Etsy fees change my crochet price?

Etsy takes a percentage of each sale (6.5% transaction plus about 3% payment processing in the US) plus fixed fees ($0.25 processing and $0.20 listing). The calculator divides your cost by one minus the fee percentage so you still keep your margin, and adds the fixed fee per order.

Can I sell items made from someone else's pattern?

Often yes, but check the designer's terms: many allow selling finished items with credit, some do not. Characters and logos you do not own are a separate trademark issue. This page is not legal advice.

The formulas are shown so you can check them. Fee defaults are examples (Etsy US: 6.5% transaction + 3% + $0.25 payment processing + $0.20 listing, checked Oct 2026; fees change, so check yours).
