How this is calculated

Paid sessions = teaching weeks × sessions per week × (1 − unpaid cancellation %).
Revenue needed = (income goal + yearly costs) ÷ (1 − tax set-aside % − fees % − buffer %).
Price per session = revenue needed ÷ paid sessions, rounded up to the dollar. Per teaching hour = price ÷ session length in hours.
Effective rate = price ÷ (session + prep + travel minutes ÷ 60). Packages = price × sessions × (1 − discount).

Example with the defaults: 40 × 18 × 0.90 = 648 paid sessions. ($40,000 + $1,500) ÷ (1 − 0.15 − 0.03 − 0.05) = $53,896.10, ÷ 648 = $83.17, so $84 per hour-long session, which is $63.00 per hour actually worked once 20 minutes of prep is counted. A 10-pack at 10% off is $756.

Questions

How much should I charge for tutoring?

Work out a sustainable floor first: the income you want plus your costs, divided by one minus your tax set-aside, fees and buffer, divided by the sessions you will actually be paid for after school breaks and cancellations. Then compare it with what tutors in your subject and level charge; test prep and advanced STEM usually command more than homework help.

Should I count prep time in my tutoring rate?

Yes. Planning, marking, messages to parents and travel are part of every session even if no one pays for them by the minute. The calculator shows your effective rate per hour actually worked so you can see the gap.

How do cancellations affect my rate?

Every unpaid cancellation or no-show removes a paid session, so the remaining sessions must earn more. A clear 24-hour cancellation policy with a fee lets you lower this percentage.

Should I offer tutoring packages?

Packages of 5 or 10 prepaid sessions reduce cancellations and admin. Keep the discount small enough that the per-session price stays above your floor; the calculator shows the per-session price inside each package.

Does this work for online tutoring?

Yes. Set travel to 0 and include platform subscription costs in yearly costs and any per-booking platform fee in the fees percentage.
